What is Harassment and Discrimination
Harassment is a type of discriminatory behavior where a person is singled out and subject to unwanted behavior because of their race, sex, religion, color, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, or genetic information is unacceptable and grounds for disciplinary action up to and including termination and also constitutes a violation of federal law. Equally unacceptable is the harassment of individuals based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
Discrimination: Discrimination is differential treatment to a person or group of people based on the color of their skin, race, ethnicity, sex, age, disability, marital status, faith, or even sexual preference.
What Can You Do About It
If you or someone you know is experiencing this type of behavior you can report it. If you do nothing at all you are still doing something…..allowing it to continue.
- Promote Conversation
- Healthy conversation is most often the key to eliminating stigma. When people don’t understand something, they tend to believe the first thing they hear or develop beliefs based on how they feel. By promoting conversation around mental illness, for example, it helps both you and your peers see the issue more clearly, and helps to remove the stigma overtime.
- Seek Help
- If you witness discrimination taking place on some level, don’t hesitate to ask someone for advice on how you should move forward. Talk to a colleague, a supervisor, or get in touch with us in the HR Department we are here to help we are here to help.
- Challenge your colleagues
- This can be a tough one, but don’t be afraid to stand up to your colleagues if you hear them saying something you feel is inappropriate or offensive.
- Speak up
- If you are or someone you know is experiencing this type of treatment, please reach out.
Once the matter has been reported it will be promptly investigated and any necessary corrective action will be taken where appropriate. All complaints of unlawful harassment will be handled in as discreet and confidential a manner as is possible under the circumstances.
The procedure for reporting incidents of harassing behavior is not intended to impair, replace, or limit the right of any employee to seek a remedy under available state or federal law by immediately reporting the matter to the appropriate state or federal agency
